John
1:1 “In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God.”
John
1:14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt
among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of
the Father, full of grace and truth.”
The
Apostle John begins this letter with the deity of Jesus and then shows
throughout the rest of the letter His work as deity on earth, so that
we might believe that He is the Christ, the Son of God and have life in
His name ( Chap. 20:31 ).
I have contemplated many times how I would act if I had been there physically
to meet Him!
Would
I:
Believe that
He was Him of whom Moses spoke of in the Law, and He whom the prophets
wrote of as Philip did ( John 1:45
)?
Doubt
that any good thing could come from Nazareth
as Nathanael did ( John
1:46
)?
Come
to Him by night for fear of who might see me, even though I knew that
only someone from God could do the things He did, like Nicodemus ( John
3:1-2 )?
Be
skeptical of His kindness as was the Samaritan woman by the well ( John
4:9 )?
Be
outraged that He healed the sick on the Sabbath, like the Jews by the
pool of Bethesda
( John 5:16
)?
Want
to follow after Him because He feed me, as the multitudes did by the
Sea of Galilee
( John 6:26
)?
Doubt
Him because I knew His earthly parents, like the Jews who found Him
on the other side of the Sea
of Galilee ( John
6:41
-42 )?
Throw
insults at Him and want to throw rocks at Him, as the Pharisees did
( John 8:48
, 59
)?
Believe in Him but not want to follow
Him because I loved the praise of men and position in life, like the
rulers of the Jews ( John 12:42-43
)?
These
are just some of the responses of those who had the opportunity to meet
the Son of God in the flesh. We look back and often say that we would
never act like many of these did! Yet don't we act like many of them when
we neglect so great a salvation as that offered in His word? The next
time you ask the Father for forgiveness of your sins, consider how you
are responding to the Son of God in your life! John
14:6 "I am the
way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through
Me.”
