Author:
Nahum
introduces himself as the author in the first verse. He also states
that he is an Elkoshite. The true location of the birth place of
Nahum is unknown. His name means “Consolation” or “Consoler”, which
is appropriate for his message of comfort to the oppressed people
of Judah
.
Date:
It
is believed that the book was written between the fall of No-amon
(the city also known as ancient Thebes
in Egypt
– Chap.
3:8 )
and the siege of Nineveh
by the
Chaldeans and Medes.
Message:
The
message is simple and pure, the fall and destruction of Nineveh
. His message
is not only a cry of joy at the fall of an oppressive foe, but it
is also the cry of confidence that God will avenge His elect when
the time is right. Nahum's short prophecy begins with a description
of the appearance of God as a Divine Warrior who has come to rescue
his people while He destroys their enemies ( Chap.
1:2-8 ).
The
overwhelming message is one that we have had repeated several times
in our reading of the major and minor prophets; for a nation to
survive it must be established upon the directed principles of righteousness
and truth. Wickedness will eventually turn a nation back to destruction
and bondage, to be oppressed by the standard which it lives.

Nahum
1:14
“The Lord
has given a command concerning you:
"Your
name shall be perpetuated no longer. Out of the house of your gods
I will cut off the carved image and the molded image. I will dig
your grave For you are vile."
Nahum
3:5 "Behold, I am against you,"
says the Lord of hosts;
"I
will lift your skirts over your face, I will show the nations your
nakedness, And the kingdoms your shame.
Nahum's
writing is both poetic and rhythmic in nature. It brings to my mind
many thoughts about the nations of earth today and the general rejection
of God, His righteousness, and His morality!
