Being
part of a majority always feels better than being in the minority.
It seems human nature almost compels us toward the majority, even
if we may have doubts about the complete accuracy or integrity of
the majority position.
If
tomorrow the majority professed that whole wheat was bad for us,
some would, without any personal research, stop eating whole wheat
simply because the majority had done so. Even for those who might
not be moved to actually stop eating whole wheat, there would likely
be some seeds of doubt sewn strictly by virtue of the majority position.
And
so it is with human nature and the way we react, and interact, with
regard to the majority vs. the minority.
Why
is it important for the Christian to understand this fundamental
truism concerning the tendency of the human nature regarding majority
vs. minority? Answer: Because we are always going to
be in the minority !
I
recall an occasion when I was discussing a specific point of God's
Truth with a friend who is a member of a popular local denomination.
After providing scriptural proof of what I was saying, the friend
still refused to surrender to the True position. His basis for feeling
safe in remaining in an erring position was simply that, (and
he and I both agreed), he was in the majority position within
the “Christian community-at-large;” (The “Christian community-at-large,”
to include all of the various denominations.)
In
conclusion, my friend said to me, “Robert, if what you are saying
is true, then most of the people in this city will be eternally
lost, because most of the people, believe what I believe, and not
what that scripture says.”
To
which, and without any hesitation, I responded, “ You
are absolutely correct !”
It
is imperative that those in the Body of Christ are confident in
our understanding of God's Word, but in order for us to not be shaken,
when confronted, we must also understand we are in the minority,
in comparison to all those outside the true Body of Christ.
If
we are not prepared for this characteristic of man which causes
one to be perfectly comfortable in an erring position, (as long
as it is the majority), we may hesitate when boldly confronted with
its reality.
In
order to help us to explain why the majority may not always be the
“safe” position as far as it concerns the Will of God; consider
the following examples from scripture:
The
Great Flood : The majority ,
were outside of the Arc and lost; the minority , were inside
of the Arc, and were saved.
The
Exodus from Egypt :
The majority of the original mass departure did not enter
the Promised Land, the minority did.
The
Day of Pentecost : Of about three
to five million Jews in Jerusalem
on the Day of Pentecost, the majority refused the invitation;
and only about 3,000, (the minority ) were added to the Body
that day.
This
misconception, that God will somehow make an exception for an erring
position because they may be the majority, contradicts the very
nature and character of the Living God and cannot be confirmed anywhere
in scripture by example!
Christians
must guard themselves from being infected or confounded by this
democratic logic when considering God and scriptural Truths. Our
culture is completely immersed in the purity of “ Majority Rule.”
We see it as an accepted standard in the judicial, civil and
social, aspects of our lives, and if we allow, human nature will
also allow the quote, “Christian”, to use it when evaluating their
spiritual standing.
Prepare
yourselves. You will be thought the fool for taking the minority
position when the majority are in error, the Truth will be mocked.
Are
you confident? Are you prepared? Are you strong enough in your love
and compassion for the lost majority to stand in the deluge of opposition
that is sure to come?
Ultimately,
every man is free to choose to either, feel better today;
or, be better eternally!
Don't
Just Feel Better, Know
Better !
